Regional books to check out
If you are interested in regional works on the Civil War and the actions of the US or CS Navies, a very good recent work (published in March 2010) is Thunder on the River. The Civil War in Northeast Florida. Written by Daniel L. Schafer, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of North Florida, the book provides a detailed overview of Union and Confederate actions (army and navy) in northeast Florida throughout the war, as well as some of the political/social background. Navy actions (principally US Navy) on the St. Johns River are given prominent treatment, as well as confederate use of "torpedoes" on the river during the latter stages of the war. These sunk four Union transports. The book is a follow-up to an earlier work Schafer co-wrote with Richard A. Martin, Jacksonville's Ordeal by Fire. A Civil War History. Thunder on the River is published by the University Press of Florida.
